At a Glynn County Board of Education meeting, an unnamed board member announced, “governor Kemp has suspended miss Gibbons from the Glynn County Board of Education by executive order. The board will follow his order in all laws and policy.” The announcement said the suspension creates an interim vacancy for District 5.
The board said the vacancy must be filled by a resident who lives within District 5. The announcement directed interested District 5 residents to submit a resume to the superintendent’s office by email or mail; the application period opens immediately and will close at noon on March 7. “Starting today, we will request anyone interested in serving as an interim district 5 board of education member submit their resume to the superintendent's office by email or mail,” the speaker said.
Board members clarified that the appointment will be interim because Miss Gibbons was suspended rather than removed; if Miss Gibbons returns, she could resume her duties and the interim member would leave the board. The board also said it will follow procedures it has used for past vacancies. Members will receive copies of candidate resumes and will discuss and vote to replace the seat at a regularly scheduled work session and meeting on either April 10 or April 15, the announcement said.
Earlier in the meeting the board voted unanimously, 6-0, to enter an executive session and later voted unanimously, 6-0, to return to open session. The meeting concluded with a unanimous motion to adjourn.
No formal vote to appoint an interim District 5 member was taken at the meeting; the board set a timeline and application process and scheduled future consideration and a vote.
