Board hears updated designs and budget tracking for new multipurpose field house

Architects and construction managers updated the USD Board of Education on a proposed two-level multipurpose building and field house for the high school, describing interior layouts, storage, locker rooms and plans to make existing training and locker-room spaces more functional.
The presentation, led by Louis Weiser of HDK and a McCownGordon representative, outlined a main-level multipurpose gym with six basketball goals, drop-down batting cages, resilient athletic flooring and referee changing rooms. The upstairs would be configured primarily for wrestling with mat storage and a wrestling office. The team showed designs intended to tie some exterior design elements to the high school while using cost-effective metal panels for the new building.
The presentation emphasized multiuse flexibility: a turf roll-out with storage and lowered batting cages would allow baseball, softball and soccer use in the same interior space. Designers also described reconfiguring the field house to combine junior-varsity and varsity football locker rooms into one larger locker room, freeing space for boys’ and girls’ locker rooms usable by other sports.
McCownGordon said it and HDK had sent the plans to market for pricing and had received budgets and interim building numbers within the last week. "We are tracking within 2% of the overall budget right now," the McCownGordon representative told the board. To avoid schedule delay, the team said the facility committee gave permission to issue a change order releasing the pre-engineered metal building subcontractors before a full guaranteed maximum price (GMP) is in place; the full GMP is expected back to the board in late March.
Board members asked several cost and design questions, including whether the district should upsize a generator to feed stadium lights and concession/press-box systems and whether insulated metal wall panels were cost-justified. Contractors said the generator upsize would allow the athletic complex (soccer/football lights, press box and field house) to remain energized during service interruptions instead of requiring staff to manually switch breakers; they said they were still evaluating return on investment. Insulated metal panels were presented as an option that would have added roughly $77,000; contractors said the smaller building size meant the insulated panels were not cost-neutral in this case.
No formal board action was taken on the multipurpose/field-house presentation at this meeting; the board will see updated GMP numbers and additional generator analysis when the team returns in late March.
