Warrington High School beat Saint Charles High School 65-51 on senior night at Warrington, with the Lady Warriors' defense — particularly a 1-2-2 press — producing turnovers that led to a decisive second-quarter run.
The victory mattered both for the scoreboard and for the program's seniors: the broadcast identified the night as Senior Night and the team held halftime and postgame recognitions for the students. John Meyer, a broadcaster on the Warrington Sports Network, said, "The press was amazing for them," after Warrington turned the game with turnovers and fast-break scoring.
Warrington extended a first-half advantage in the second quarter by turning Saint Charles' pressure into fast-break points. Sofia Behnke finished as Warrington's leading scorer; the broadcast said she had 18 points. Other contributors on the scoreboard named in the broadcast included Naija Love (10 points), Emma Duncan (entered games as a senior), Claire Goldsmith (multiple plays creating scoring opportunities), Savannah Miller (11 points off the bench) and Mikaela Woodhouse (10 points). The announcers repeatedly credited Warrington's defensive pressure and rebounding for giving the team repeated scoring chances.
Saint Charles produced many of its points from the free-throw line in the second quarter, the broadcast reported, and guard Grace Basler was the Pirates' leading scorer at different points; announcers cited Basler with eight second-quarter points and said she was 4-for-4 on free throws in one stretch. The Pirates had several players in foul trouble during the second half, which the announcers said limited their rotation.
The broadcasters also summarized season records and upcoming schedules given during the telecast: the broadcast listed Warrington's record (reported earlier in the night) and announced that Saint Charles would play at Francis Howell North on Feb. 24 and that Warrington would next play Holt on Feb. 25.
The broadcast wrapped with player statistics and senior acknowledgments. John Meyer highlighted the team's defensive effort and singled out Behnke's scoring: "If we had to give a star of the game, it'd go to Sofia Behnke," he said. The broadcast also recognized several seniors by name during halftime festivities.
