District staff asked the board to consider buying architectural and structural engineering plans for renovating four upstairs restrooms at E.O. Kaufman. Staff said prior assessment work cost roughly $25,000 and that the full plans total about $82,000 and run more than 200 pages.
Board member Shannon said he had consulted civil engineers and recommended asking ESG to appear and justify the $82,000 price. “My recommendation to fellow board members … is to push this off and have Mr. Atkins have ESG present next month and let's ask them exactly why this is $82,000 and 200 pages,” Shannon said.
The board voted to postpone the purchase until the March meeting and asked district staff (Mr. Atkins and Mr. Tucker) to invite ESG to explain the plans and scope. Board members also noted the work is complex — cast‑iron plumbing, electrical rework and structural issues — and that the plan is intended to allow local contractors to bid for renovation work to be completed over a summer schedule if approved.
Why it matters: the closed restrooms were identified in May and were taken out of service in fall 2024; staff said all four upstairs restrooms must be renovated together because of how plumbing and structure are configured. Staff said the district can wait another month without creating an immediate safety emergency.
