SAISD honors counselors, awards robotics teams and celebrates CTE 'District of Distinction'

Counselor recognitions: Rebecca Klein, SAISD director of counseling and mental health, announced campus and individual awards presented by the 3 Rivers Counseling Association and the Texas School Counseling Association. Elementary Counselor of the Year honors included Olivia Sarabia (Reagan Elementary); other awards recognized campus counseling teams and high‑school counselor Jennifer Young (Central High School). Amy Mizell Flint received the Friend of Counseling Award for advocacy on student mental health.
Robotics and STEM: Doctor Gomez and district staff recognized students and coaches who competed Feb. 1 at Angelo State University’s Ben Kelley Center in the first annual RoboRam Showdown. Several elementary and middle‑school teams earned awards including Teamwork Champions, Robot Skills placements and Judges’ Awards. STEM coaches and sponsors named during the meeting included Mr. Ratcliffe, Mrs. Barton, Mrs. Feck and Mr. Lisonbee. District staff said about seven elementary campuses currently field teams in competitions, with materials and programming being rolled out to all elementary campuses.
CTE recognition: Roxanne Fentress, director of Career and Technical Education, accepted a District of Distinction award from the Career and Technical Association of Texas (CTAT). District officials said SAISD offers 18 programs of study across 12 career clusters and highlighted certifications and industry partnerships that provide students hands‑on experience and potential pathways to employment or further training.
Why it matters: Administrators framed these recognitions as part of SAISD’s broader emphasis on student supports, career readiness and STEM pathways. District leaders said early exposure to robotics and sustained CTE programming create pipelines from elementary STEM labs through high‑school career pathways.
Next steps: District staff said they will continue to expand robotics and STEM supports across campuses, support CTE industry partnerships and publicize counselor resources for families.
