Board reviewing federal 'Dear Colleague' guidance on DEI; district says no immediate action required

Board members discussed guidance issued Feb. 14 by the U.S. Department of Education, often described in the meeting as a “Dear Colleague” letter, and how the district will respond.
Board member Ben explained the letter provides guidance about how federal civil-rights laws may be applied and noted it does not by itself carry the force of law. “It’s a letter from the federal government to school leaders providing guidance about how the administration intends to apply existing laws,” he said. Ben said the administration’s follow-up materials in the coming days could target what some states call “prohibited concepts,” and that the district would evaluate whether any contracts or third-party agreements need revision.
District counsel and senior staff said they will review central-office contracts with third parties and return to the board if changes are necessary, but they did not recommend immediate policy changes. Ben and other board members said they will continue to monitor rulemaking and guidance as it develops.
The discussion was informational; the board did not adopt any action at the meeting.
