Public Schools of Robeson County curriculum staff on Feb. 21 presented a generative‑AI literacy plan that outlines how the district intends to train staff and students in the safe, ethical and pedagogically appropriate use of generative artificial intelligence.
Lisa Feldman, digital teaching and learning staff, told the board the district’s plan aligns with North Carolina guidance and the Portrait of a Graduate framework, emphasizing “durable human skills” such as critical thinking, communication and collaboration alongside AI literacy. Feldman defined key terms for the board — artificial intelligence, AI literacy and generative AI — and said the district’s plan includes separate staff and student literacy outcomes, targeted professional development and classroom resources.
Feldman described the proposed rollout as phased: district leadership training and principal orientation, summer training for digital technology coaches and media coordinators, and teacher professional development tied to grade spans and curriculum areas. The plan would include materials for communicating with parents and tools for teachers to require students to document how they used AI in coursework.
Board members and staff discussed academic integrity and detection tools. One presenter noted detection software (for example, plagiarism or AI‑detection tools) is evolving and not foolproof; practitioners said assignment design and requiring students to show prompt threads or explain how they used AI are part of the district’s approach to preserve academic honesty while preparing students to use AI as a “thought partner.”
The board did not adopt a formal policy at the meeting; staff said the district will align local guidance with pending State Board of Education policy updates and continue principal and staff training through spring and summer.
