Board approves contracts, event permits and appointments in work session; fireworks moved to Wilson Park

In a work-session segment following public hearings, the Mineola Board of Trustees approved several routine resolutions and contracts.
The board authorized use of the Village Community Center auditorium for a cooperative annual meeting at 100 Clinton Avenue (DeKalb/Delcap management) and approved a contract with Starfire Corporation for a fireworks display at Wilson Park on July 12, 2025, at a cost of $10,000 with a rain date of July 19. Village officials said fireworks were moved from Memorial Park to Wilson Park because Memorial Park’s usual staging area is under school construction and the new turf likely would not allow fireworks staging.
Trustees also approved a pilot farmer’s market run by NYU Langone in Parking Field Number 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on selected Thursdays; the hospital will lead event setup, cleanup and safety. The board noted the field has limited spaces and will publicize dates.
The board approved membership for six new Mineola Fire Department members — Helder Gomez Alvez, Anthony Ferreira, Justin Gandarella, Charles Madine, Matthew Lopes and Shane Kelly — and advanced two routine personnel items: (1) Marlene Barbosa’s request to execute an employee health-benefit buyback option pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement, and (2) the appointment of Maria Palumbo as secretary to the Architectural Review Board effective March 6, 2025.
Most work-session items were approved by motion with the typical “all in favor” voice vote. Starfire’s fireworks contract was approved on a motion by Deputy Mayor Sartori and seconded by Trustee Casado; the motion carried. The board directed staff to coordinate logistics and public notice for events.
