Mobile City staff said they cleared an encampment and provided assistance to an individual who had been living at the site for about a year and a few months.
A Staff member said the cleanup followed a report from neighbors. “Not that he was causing any problems or anything, but they just wanted us to come out and see if we can provide some type of assistance to him to get him out of the situation that he was in,” the Staff member said.
The staff member said the person had belongings typically associated with a home, including a television, a generator and a vehicle. “We just were concerned about the fact that this was an individual, a human being that was sleeping in a place that's not meant for any individual to be,” the Staff member said.
According to the staff member, multiple city and partner agencies worked together on the outreach. “All these agencies work together to fulfill their mission and help the city do what we are called to do. And that's just to make life for our residents better,” the Staff member said. The staff member added, “These homeless individuals, these unhoused individuals, they are our residents. They are a part of our community.”
The staff member described the operation as successful. “And this, today, it was truly a success,” the Staff member said.
The transcript provided no formal vote, ordinance, funding amounts or names of partner agencies, and it did not specify what services were offered after the outreach or whether any enforcement action was taken. The city’s account in the meeting focused on outreach, welfare concerns and the presence of household items at the site.
