Board adds opioid-treatment nurse to jail medical contract using settlement funds

The Caswell County Board of Commissioners approved an amendment to its contract with Southern Health Partners to add the monthly cost of an opioid-treatment nurse for inmates at the county detention center.
County staff said the board previously approved using opioid settlement funds to hire an additional nurse and to cover medication costs for opioid treatment in the jail. The amendment adds $37,120.51 in annual costs to the existing Southern Health Partners contract; county staff said all of the expense will be paid from opioid settlement funds and that those funds must be used to address the opioid epidemic.
Commissioner Wren moved to approve the contract amendment; Commissioner Winn seconded. The board voted in favor and the motion carried.
County staff said they will provide a future update on the broader use and remaining balance of opioid settlement funds when more information is available.
