Wythe County supervisors approve rate increases, board appointments, contracts and infrastructure resolutions

At its Jan. 28 meeting the Wythe County Board of Supervisors approved camp rate increases for Retreat Lake, multiple board appointments, a sewer extension resolution, fire department payouts, a contract amendment on minimum wage, a data-center support resolution and other routine items.
The Wythe County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 28 approved several motions including campground rate increases, multiple board and authority appointments, a sewer extension resolution and a contract amendment tied to the new Virginia minimum wage.
Miss Haffley, who presented the Retreat Lake rate proposal, told the board the recommended increase sets primitive (tent) sites at $32 per night and RV sites at $44 per night. “So the days for primitive are $32 and then for RV sites, it would be $44. That is the recommended increase,” she said. The board voted to adopt the presented rates; supervisors noted the county offers a 10% discount to Wythe County residents and said existing reservations would be honored.
The board approved a series of appointments. The Building Code Appeals/Contractor Appeals board appointment of J.R. Gilman was moved and approved. The board reappointed Absher to another term and appointed Bobby Angles to the Joint Industrial Development Authority (JIDA). Michelle Jones was reappointed to the Mountain CAP board; the board said it would seek a representative for People Incorporated North District Development Financing and report back.
Supervisors approved resolution 2024-208 (Fort Chishol South Sewer Extension project resolution) to advance a local sewer extension project. They also approved a resolution supporting data centers in Progress Park and directed staff to forward copies to legislators.
The finance-related motions included authorizing release of a $40,000 payout to volunteer fire departments for call-out funds, and approving an amendment to the county’s contract with RG Childress to reflect the state’s minimum wage increase from $12.00 to $12.41 per hour. Deputy County Administrator Hankins said the $40,000 is budgeted annually and historically is split between equal base shares and a call-volume allocation.
The board also consented to the recommended legal services consent for the New River Regional Water Authority and approved officer slates for the Speedwell and Max Meadows Fire Departments following a closed-session review. County Attorney Farley reported a federal suit against an animal control officer had been dismissed by the plaintiff.
Several informational staff reports noted that ambulances returned from repair and that staff are inventorying HVAC and other capital needs at volunteer stations; the board asked staff to explore potential mitigation grant dollars for flood and debris removal projects discussed after recent storms.
All listed votes were approved on roll-call votes at the meeting.
