Parks staff says vandalism cost estimated at roughly $7,400–$10,000; county increasing patrols

Parks staff told the committee they had prepared a low-end estimate of $7,459 to repair vandalism at Sunrise Park and Columbia Park and said a higher-end total could reach about $10,000 as assessment continues.
The staff breakdown included the replacement of one 6-inch red oak tree (appraised at about $1,441), two large picnic tables (about $1,175 each), two trash receptacles (about $500 each), a dog‑waste station ($578) and staff labor hours for removal, repair and cleanup. Jonah Jacobson said the total did not include the staff time he spent preparing the estimate.
Staff said Multnomah County Sheriff's deputies issued citations to individuals identified in the incidents and that the county had increased patrols at Sunrise and Columbia parks following the vandalism. Jacobson said processing through the county citation and court system typically takes three to six months.
Several committee members urged the city to pursue prosecution where possible. Member Sherry Winters said prior neighborhood vandalism prosecutions resulted in recovery of materials costs when cases were resolved; others thanked the sheriff's office for increasing patrols.
Staff said estimates may increase if additional damage is identified, and that replacement of trail cameras or other equipment would be an added cost beyond the current estimate. No new budget appropriation was requested at the meeting; staff will continue to document costs and follow up with the county.
