Good evening, Great Valley School Board. My name is Shria Aduri, and I'm a fourth grader at Katie Markley Elementary School. I'm one of the four members of the KDM student council executive committee. We're excited to be here tonight to share with you an update on all the wonderful things that the KDM has been doing so far this year.
The Katie Markley (KDM) student council told the board it raised more than $200 at a January PTO bingo night to buy food and supplies for the People's Pantry in Fraser and plans a spring shopping trip using those funds. KDM members also reported a February project making more than 130 Valentine's cards for the Veterans Hospital in Coastwell and a pencil-gram fundraiser by second-grade classes to support the East Whiteland Fire Company. Student council members said a two-week drive ahead of the school's 100th day produced more than 270 personal-care items for the People's Pantry; Dr. Hofferts had promised an all-school recess if the goal was met.
High school student representative Ryan updated the board on upcoming and recent high-school activities. He said Mr. Great Valley will take place on March 13 with proceeds going to the Chrissy Character Award for two seniors. Ryan highlighted English teacher Ms. Lutz's recent Delaware Valley Excellence in Teaching Award, winter sports results (boys basketball 15–9, girls basketball 11–9), and district qualifiers in wrestling and swimming.
Ryan also described a new heritage-language course at the high school aimed at students already proficient in a language; the course focuses on deeper cultural study, literature and film.
The students closed by inviting the community to school events including a KDM Mindfulness Day on April 11 and a school fair on May 9 where the student council will have a booth to raise small donations for the People's Pantry.
Board members thanked the students and praised the council’s activities.
