Planning Commission approves special-use permit for Resting Rainbow pet crematory in Fulton Industrial area

The South Fulton Planning Commission voted Feb. 19 to approve a special-use permit for Resting Rainbow Pet Memorials and Cremation to operate a pet crematory at 4445 Commerce Circle SW (unit B10) in the Fulton Industrial Business Overlay District.
Staff recommended approval with two conditions: that the special-use permit be nontransferable and that the permittee "maintain a valid south forklift and desist license to operate a special use for a pet crematorium" (language as stated in the staff report). Staff presented the building program as approximately 3,500 square feet with roughly 1,155 square feet of office space and 2,345 square feet of warehouse/processing space.
Applicant Devon Fitz told the commission Resting Rainbow is a franchised operation and that this Atlanta location would be the firm's first in the city. Fitz described operations, certification and equipment: the facility would use an A250P2 side-by-side cremator the applicant said is "the most efficient" on the market, emits "no odors, no smoke, no chemicals," and operates at roughly 70–71 decibels, "equivalent to about the sound of a washing machine or dryer." Fitz said staff would be factory-trained and certified and that the business would comply with Georgia air-quality and EPA requirements.
No public comment cards were submitted for the case. After discussion commissioners voted to approve staff's findings of fact and then approved the special-use permit as recommended. A roll-call vote recorded affirmatives by Commissioners Smith Vickers, Reverend Shannon Jones, Greg Bailey, Devon, and Yvonne Boone.
Why it matters: The permitted use adds a pet cremation facility in an industrially zoned area. The commission attached the conditions staff recommended; the final permit will be subject to compliance with city and state environmental and licensing requirements.
Next steps: Staff will finalize the permit paperwork and the applicant must maintain the license(es) and operate in accordance with the conditions attached to the permit.
