Board enters executive session to discuss police and fire labor negotiations

The Rutland City Board of Aldermen voted on Feb. 18 to enter executive session to discuss labor negotiations with both the police department and the fire department unions. For each session the board first voted that premature public disclosure would place the city at a substantial disadvantage and then moved into closed session.
For the police negotiation item the board voted to enter executive session with the mayor, police chief, treasurer, clerk, human resources director, city attorney and the chair of the police commission, citing Title 1, Section 313(a)(1)(B) (statutory authority for executive sessions for labor negotiations). The board similarly voted to enter executive session later that evening for fire department labor negotiations with the same inclusion of relevant staff and officials.
Both motions carried by voice vote; no substantive bargaining positions were reported in the public record.
