Elyria holds public forum on citywide zoning rewrite; residents press officials on daycares, notice rules and business regulations

Elyria planning staff on Monday presented a draft citywide zoning code and fielded questions from residents about how the changes would affect daycares, notice procedures, business operations and property maintenance.

City Planner Chris Schonig, joined by Community Development Director Ashley Scott, Assistant Safety Service Director Dawn Calvert, Chief Building Official Daryl Farkas and Administrative Legal Counsel Mark Craig, led the meeting and said the draft is still in an early review phase and has not been submitted to the Planning Commission or City Council. "This is a preliminary hearing just to hear the input from all of you," Schonig said, adding that the draft and maps are posted on the city planning web page and that printed copies were available at the meeting.

The draft would consolidate Elyria’s roughly 18 current zoning districts into about eight new categories, officials said.
