Olivia Davidson, a Black Student Union leader at Woodland Hills High School, told the school board on Feb. 19 that the group is carrying out a month-long program of assemblies, social-media posts and in-school activities to commemorate Black History Month.
"Our initiative consists of an array of events designated to honor black history, culture, and contributions to society," Davidson said during a presentation to the board. She said the BSU began the month with an assembly on Feb. 3 presented by Davonte Butler and will run a daily social-media campaign and morning-announcement features through Feb. 28.
Davidson described a door-decorating contest and decorations put up at the high school in late January. She said the BSU will visit the district's elementary schools to present lessons aligned with the theme “African Americans and labor.” The group plans a spirit week Feb. 24–28 with themed days—"Melanin Mondays," "Red Day," "Green Day," "Yellow Day"—and a February 28 family-feud style trivia event to close the month.
Sonaya Lee, another BSU leader, reviewed the student group’s travel plan to Washington, D.C. She said the group will meet early at the high school, visit the Washington Monument, and tour the National Museum of African American History and Culture before returning late at night.
Board members thanked the students for their presentation. The board did not take any formal action on the presentation; it was listed under "Presentations."
