Parents and community groups press board over superintendent search and DEI; some speakers call for dialogue

A series of patron comments at the Feb. 20 Francis Howell R‑III Board of Education meeting focused on the district’s superintendent search, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) priorities, teacher working conditions and the board’s responsiveness to stakeholder concerns.

Speakers representing or affiliated with local parent groups — including a group that identified itself as Francis Howell Forward — urged the board to engage with community members who disagree with its direction and to honor input gathered by an outside search consultant. “Choosing to dismiss community survey results in the superintendent search would reflect an ongoing pattern of disregarding stakeholder input,” one speaker said.

Several commenters criticized board members or candidates for publicly opposing DEI or related policies. One patron argued national trends show organizations are moving away from DEI, while other speakers defined DEI broadly and said they wanted school leadership who would protect marginalized students. Multiple speakers urged civil dialogue and said they had offered to meet with board members without success.

Other patron remarks addressed class‑size discrepancies between buildings, with a speaker saying per‑school averages mask considerable inequities in individual classrooms. Another speaker reviewed district legal fees and said the recent rise in legal spending was concerning.

Board members did not take immediate policy action in response to public comment, but several acknowledged the concerns and discussed opportunities for further dialogue; staff and trustees noted the superintendent search timeline and the outside consultant’s community input would factor into next steps.
