The Committee on Legislation, Rules and Policies of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors approved revisions to three administrative policies governing student-initiated groups, student publications and student contests and performances at a committee meeting held at the Central Services Building. Each motion carried unanimously, with five aye votes.
The revisions are procedural and largely terminology-based, staff said. Dr. John Hill, director of college and career readiness for Milwaukee Public Schools, said the changes update language and reflect current school structures. "The revisions to administrative policy 7.19, student initiated groups, consist of minor revisions to terminology and school structures," Hill said during his presentation on policy 7.19.
Board staff said Policy 7.19 replaces earlier labels such as "non-secondary" and "secondary" with K-8 and 9-12 designations to reflect MPS's range of school configurations. On Policy 7.2, which covers student publications, Hill told the committee that the revisions "consist of some minor revisions in terminology" and that staff updated language "to reflect social media," which did not exist when the policy was first written.
For Administrative Policy and Procedure 7.21, on student contests and performances, Hill said the district added references to "district leadership" to recognize contests and performances organized at the district level. He also described procedural clarifications for contract retention and permissions, saying, "We also provide in a little additional clarity around how the copy of a contract for a musical, should be retained and, clarity around, requesting permission for use of material from a publisher."
No members of the public registered to comment on any of the three items. Eduardo Gervan, interim superintendent, opened the agenda items by referencing board governance policy 2.11, under which the board's policies are periodically reviewed.
