City Hall renovation receives single bid above budget; council to review options

The Lexington City Manager reported Feb. 20 that the city received a single bid of $5,718,000 for the planned City Hall renovation, exceeding the construction budget of approximately $5,000,000. City staff said they will present an updated report with total project costs and options to council in advance of the next meeting.
Staff and project leads (including Miss Bell and Public Works Director Mister Madigan) said the full project cost will include design fees, project contingency, swing-space costs for temporary office space, and furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E). Staff noted the FF&E estimate is approximately $149,000 and that eliminating or deferring that line would not close the entire gap between the bid and the budget.
The bid form shows the bidder is from Madison Heights; staff identified Wall Construction as the contractor on the apparent low bid. City staff said they were surprised to receive only one bid and will provide several options for council to consider at an upcoming meeting, ranging from canceling the project to proceeding and identifying additional funding sources.
Ending: Staff will issue a report ahead of the scheduled meeting that lays out full costs and recommended options for council consideration.
