Holyoke students Michael Melendez and Samara Thaddison recognized for statewide excellence

Two Holyoke High students were acknowledged by the committee after receiving the Massachusetts Award for Excellence; the committee voted to send letters of congratulations to the students and their parents and present certificates on behalf of the school committee.
The Holyoke School Committee opened its Jan. 27 meeting by recognizing two students who received the Massachusetts Award for Excellence from the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents.
Superintendent Anthony Soto read nominations for Holyoke High senior Michael Melendez and Dean Campus senior Samara (Samara/Samara spellings in packet) Thaddison, describing Melendez's 4.5 GPA, nine AP courses, three college courses, QuestBridge finalist status and community service and Thaddison's leadership in student ambassador programming and career-technical courses. "He has an impressive 4.5 GPA ... Michael has a laser focus on his goals and is very motivated to attend a competitive 4 year college and plans to major in neuroscience," Soto read about Melendez.
School Committee members moved to send letters to the students and their parents, and policy staff prepared certificates to recognize the award. The motion to send letters and present certificates passed unanimously.
Committee members emphasized praise for school staff who supported the students. "We have to include our staff, our teachers ... they're the ones that are helping those students along, and they deserve applause too," said Mister Calamore.
