Troy commission to unveil Ohio historical marker July 18; welcomes new member Robert Lewis

"The historical marker has been delivered," Commissioner Salome reported, and the commission agreed to work with the cemetery department to have the marker in place for a July 18 unveiling. Commissioners discussed planning for an unveiling ceremony — including whether to invite the Veterans Museum, how to advertise the event and whether to include a blessing — and said the commission would finalize those plans at its May meeting.
Commissioners noted a Civil War connection tied to Troy, mentioning that soldiers who came to Troy during the Civil War include a man identified in the discussion as the father of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Commissioners said they want the unveiling to honor those soldiers respectfully and discussed consulting veterans’ groups about appropriate ceremonial elements.
The commission also formally welcomed its newest member, Robert Lewis. Lewis told the commission he retired a little over a year ago from the Army Reserves, has lived in Troy for more than 30 years and that Troy has been home to his family. "It's a privilege. I've been retired just a little over a year from the Army Reserves. So we've been a part of the Troy community for over 30 years," Lewis said.
Commissioners reported ongoing planning by the Troy Foundation for a community dialogue on diversity, equity and inclusion with organizer Karen Townsend; no final dates were announced. The commission confirmed that members received the January 2025 police reports and that no questions were raised during the meeting about that report.
