Ward 6 resident urges immediate replacement of Litwin School gym citing asbestos, safety concerns

David AMO, speaking during the public input portion of the Feb. 19 meeting, urged the School Committee to move quickly to replace the gymnasium floor and renovate the gym at Litwin School in Ward 6.
AMO said he has advocated for a new Litwin gym for more than 20 years and that the current gym has asbestos tile and holes in the floor, which he described as unsafe for student use. He said he had discussed the issue with Superintendent Ware and with Committee member Sonny Brooks and asked the committee to use available funds — he mentioned the city stabilization account and school funds — to complete the work.
AMO emphasized health and safety concerns, saying, "When you're talking asbestos, right there that throws a red flag. The health and safety of our children come at any cost. So whether it's $300,000 or it's a million dollars, it's time to put the money into the health and safety of our children and get something done up at Ward 6." He closed by asking the committee to act rather than continue discussing the problem.
The facilities presentation later on the agenda included Litwin on the list of projects requiring electrical panel and air-handler work; Chaplin said some Litwin work has been approved under ESSER and that Litwin appears on capital priority lists presented to the committee.
