Quincy schools warn North Quincy High is at capacity; open‑enrollment decisions to be made in July

Superintendent Mulvey told the Quincy School Committee on Feb. 12 that preliminary enrollment projections for the 2025–26 school year show growth across the district and that North Quincy High School is already at or near capacity.

Registration for kindergarten through grade 12 is open, Mulvey said, and the district published enrollment projections that color‑code each school by capacity: red (at/above capacity), yellow (some grades tight), green (availability). He stressed that projections flagged as beige are likely to change because most new registrations occur for pre‑K, kindergarten, grades 1, 6 and 9.

Mulvey said open‑enrollment decisions will be made in July so the district has the most complete data and noted exceptions for students who are siblings of currently enrolled pupils: those siblings remain eligible to transfer under existing policy. He recommended clear communication to families that open enrollment is subject to space availability and that decisions will be postponed until July this year.

Committee members asked about students who might be living outside Quincy and attending Quincy schools; the superintendent described the district’s residency verification work, saying the district has three attendance officers and an additional resource through the sheriff’s office to perform school visits and review attendance data. He said the district regularly discovers cases at initial registration or during the year and asks families who do not live in Quincy to register in their home district when appropriate.
