MSD Martinsville Schools recognized spelling-bee winners from multiple elementary schools, Bell Intermediate Academy and John R. Wooden Middle School and announced two upcoming student-focused events: a career lab ribbon cutting at John R. Wooden Middle School and a district robotics showcase.
Board President Heather Staggs introduced principals and representatives from the district’s elementary and middle schools to present winners and runners-up from school spelling bees. Named winners in the transcript include Morgan Seestin (Brooklyn Elementary), Colin Goodner (Centerton), Ava Weiner (Poston Road), Kane Burton (South), Jennifer Soong (Green Township; not present), Charlie Windell (Smith Elementary; not present), Beau Craven (Bell Intermediate Academy) and Baja Harper (John R. Wooden Middle School; not present). Runners-up and facilitators were announced for each school in turn; parents and teachers were invited to the stage for recognition.
Superintendent Eric Bolin played a recorded statement from Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner congratulating the district on the opening of the John R. Wooden Paxton Patterson career lab and urging students to use hands-on career labs to explore postsecondary options. Dr. Jenner’s recorded remarks included: “This new career lab will provide hands on learning opportunities, allowing students to really think about what is possible ahead, to find out what they’re passionate about, and to be better prepared to experience careers in high school that have aligned with their future goals.”
The board announced the career lab ribbon-cutting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at John R. Wooden Middle School. The superintendent also invited the public to a district robotics showcase on Feb. 22 in the Martinsville High School field house; staff said the district is working to host a regional robotics event next year and that area superintendents and business leaders will be invited to the career lab ribbon cutting.
Ending: The meeting’s recognition segment emphasized student achievement across academic and extracurricular programs and connected the district’s new career lab and robotics activities to broader efforts to expand career-technical education and hands-on learning in the district.
