Board approves multi-year successor agreement with teachers' union

The Franklin Township Board of Education on June 18 approved a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for a successor contract with the Franklin Township Education Association (FTEA). The board acted on a motion to move P1, which was made by Walter and seconded by Nancy; the motion passed on a roll call vote with all members voting yes.

Board language in the meeting described the item as "a memorandum of agreement for terms of a successor agreement between the Board of Education and the Franklin Township Education Association for the school years 2024–2029, as previously reviewed by the Board of Education in closed session." The board president congratulated the FTEA and the personnel committee on completing the negotiations.

Dan Mayer, identified in public comment as president of the Franklin Township Education Association, addressed the board after the vote. "What we accomplished here tonight will have positive ramifications for our students and this district for years to come," Mayer said, thanking the personnel committee and board members for a shared vision and the negotiated agreement.

Board members and the public offered congratulations to the bargaining unit and emphasized the collaborative nature of the process. The board president also thanked NJEA representatives who assisted during negotiations.

Why it matters: The MOA establishes terms for teacher employment for the covered years and was presented as the result of a negotiated process. The board approved the agreement following the standard motion and roll call procedure; the MOA had been reviewed in closed session before public approval.
