Dorchester 02 staff update board on referendum-funded projects, asbestos abatement and school additions

Facilities staff gave the committee a status update on referendum and smaller capital projects, describing contractor selection, upcoming bids, and design choices for several schools.

Staff said asbestos abatement and interior lighting/ceiling work will begin this summer at multiple campuses. Flowertown and Newington middle schools were highlighted: Flower Town (Flowertown) has about 30,000 square feet of panels to be abated and Newington about 50,000 square feet. The district issued purchase orders for full replacements of ceiling grids and lighting in several schools and expects the work to occur during summer breaks where feasible to limit disruption.

Referendum projects under active construction or near-construction include: - Sand Hill Elementary addition: ground was recently broken and the first full floor plans show classroom stacks on two floors; staff said the contractor expects to move students in about 220 days from the construction start. - Silverville Elementary: staff presented two design concepts for replacement of an older wing; concept 1 preserves a courtyard and a fire-lane layout staff preferred, while concept 2 would enclose the courtyard and create fire-department access concerns. The team is finalizing the design with the construction manager. - Ashley Ridge High School: plans add roughly 5,000 square feet of band-room space, create uniform and storage areas, add individual practice rooms, and convert the existing band space into an enlarged weight room along with two additional classrooms by dividing oversized classrooms. - Sirville High School gym: staff said designs were reined in to match budget constraints and that they are working toward an accessible building to seat approximately 3,500 spectators and provide restrooms and support spaces; a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) effort was reported as underway.

Additional work: interior flooring replacement at a middle school referenced in the referendum will be bid and executed over the summer; Meadow Middle School’s courtyard renovation and East Eddystone Middle School parking additions were also mentioned. Staff also reported TIF-funded projects began demolition the day of the meeting, with plans to stage a district-groundbreaking photo once the site is cleared enough to host an event without disrupting school operations. Fine-arts consolidation at a high school was part of the TIF work: staff said the fine-arts departments were consulted and the new space will consolidate music, dance and drama activities into roughly 10,000 square feet.

Ending: Staff said they will continue design refinements, issue bids where required, and return with GMP or bid packages; no formal approvals were requested at this meeting beyond routine procurement and design progress reports.
