Commissioners discuss budget committee's recommended budget; delegation vote expected March 12

County commissioners reviewed the recent budget committee meeting, discussed line-item changes the committee recommended, and prepared for an expected full-delegation vote on March 12.

Deborah presented the budget review committee's recommendation packet and said the committee had delivered its recommended budget to the full delegation. Commissioners and staff said the review team took at least one formal vote on the bottom line and that the committee used consensus and several 3-3 divisions on line items. Commissioners said minutes from the budget review meetings were limited and not all line-item votes were recorded in detail.

Commissioners and staff discussed several specific items the review committee adjusted: the amount to be raised by taxes reported in the packet (staff said the committee recorded a 6.2 percent increase in the amount to be raised by taxes), and that the overall increase from the 2024 budget to 2025 was confirmed as 4.1 percent after clarification. Commissioners expressed concern that repeated underfunding of expenses over multiple years could erode fund balance and that a focus on lowering taxes by the delegation may carry operational consequences.

The review committee made line-item cuts and adjustments, staff said, including reductions that affected outside agencies (reported as roughly $40,000 total in cuts) and a request that the sheriff delay a $30,000 carport purchase. Some items discussed by the review committee were tabled for the full delegation to decide; commissioners said they expected debate and potentially divisive votes when the full delegation convenes.
