Cultural Affairs staff presented the commission with a monthly summary of exhibitions, public-art projects, conservation work, and grant opportunities, noting several exhibitions and installations scheduled through fall 2025.
"You were all issued a copy of the staff report document, which includes all of the written updates for the Percent for Art funded projects," Holly Lay said, summarizing the packet distributed to commissioners. Staff highlighted upcoming gallery openings, public receptions, and projects selected through Calls for Artists for site-specific works on the 3 on Main program.
Staff named selected artists David Fay, Ross Takahashi and Vision for the 3 on Main sites and said installations are planned for fall 2025 and will be on view for two years. Laura Machado reported that Cliff Garden Studio completed milestones for a forthcoming sculpture pedestal and said installation is scheduled for May 20, 2026. Mary Sabo described ongoing conservation and maintenance work, including coordination with artist Eric Vazola to repair graffiti damage to murals at Doug Selby Park and vendor selection to restore the Dennis Oppenheim paintbrush gateway.
Staff also reported progress on the Medical District art projects: Brainstorm by Wayne Littlejohn is in production and slated for installation in front of the UNLV Dental School; Starchild by Mark Branvik is in fabrication for a site at Shadow Lane and Wellness Way; and staff were exploring an alternate Charleston location for a piece by Luis Ferlirico. The Westside Education and Training Center public-art projects were awarded to artist Adolfo Gonzalez; both a mural and a sculpture contract have been executed, with mural work set to begin in May and expected completion by fall 2025.
Staff announced two Nevada Arts Council grant opportunities: the FY26 Arts Learning Project Grant (applications due April 1, 2025) and the FY26 Project Grant for Artists (a $3,000 award; applications due March 3, 2025). Staff encouraged sign-ups for the Public Art and Galleries newsletter and noted a public art walking tour resource.
The presentation also included an update that the annual inventory of the city’s public-art collection is approximately 40% complete and that the Pedro Selby Park murals require artist-led repair where graffiti removal damaged underlying paint.
