Board approves special exception for electrical substation on Perimeter Parkway parcel

The board approved a special exception allowing construction of an electrical substation on property along Perimeter Parkway to serve a proposed data center project.
Dylan Rusk, representing CLOP Montgomery Alabama LLC and Oppiden Investment Company, told the board Alabama Power will handle substation construction and provided technical details, including that the substation will be sized to meet expected load. Rusk described it as “a 25 megawatt or MBA substation,” and said the data center building itself will be roughly in the 18-megawatt range; he also said a will-serve letter from Alabama Power supports the project.
Board members asked about building height (applicant said the data center building height is 39 feet), staffing (the applicant said 12 employees) and truck traffic (applicant said deliveries would be infrequent). After brief discussion the board approved the special exception as requested by the applicant.
The applicant said the landowner will retain ownership of the parcel and will grant Alabama Power an easement for the substation. The board’s approval was recorded by voice/hand vote with the membership present.
