Abington Heights students present sports‑media course, highlight scoreboard, social media and event support

Students in Abington Heights High School's sports‑media program presented examples of the course’s work to the board, describing hands‑on learning that includes social‑media posts, scoreboard operation, event setup and student training.

A student presenter said the program made content more “accessible,” adding: “People are starting to enjoy it more because it's more accessible. There's not as many words on it for people to read and have to take so much time — they could look at a picture and see this player got this award on this day … they loved it.” The presenter described producing a newsletter and social posts to highlight athletes and events.

The students said they ran a November fall commitment day for Division I and Division II senior athletes, managed a PBIS pep rally where fall sports captains and cheerleaders visited elementary schools, and operated scoreboard displays during football, volleyball and basketball games. One presenter described learning to present starting lineups and in‑game statistics on the scoreboard with assistance from staff, and training younger students to run the system in future years.

Students also described assisting with game‑day logistics — setting up gates and ticket booths, distributing radios and preparing sport‑specific scoreboards — and noted this work helped them build teamwork, communication and resume experience for college applications. One student said they had applied to Syracuse’s program and hoped the experience would support admission; another said they had been accepted to Ithaca and were interested in sports journalism and analytics.

The board thanked the students for the presentation.
