Lyons Township board approves Patrice Payne as director of curriculum and instruction

Board President Gretsch called for a vote after Superintendent Dr. Waterman recommended Payne; the board recorded unanimous affirmative roll-call votes. The board did not record a named mover or seconder in the minutes beyond “So moved. Second.”
The board’s recommendation followed a search that drew 55 applicants, two rounds of interviews and presentations by finalists, Dr. Waterman said. Payne described her interview experience and thanked members of the board and students who participated on interview panels. “Every member of the team has been amazing, and so welcoming. And so I am ready to get to work,” Payne said.
Dr. Waterman summarized Payne’s academic and professional background: a Bachelor of Arts in English, speech and secondary education from Pepperdine University; a master’s in administration from Governors State University; and an Ed.D. in educational leadership from the University of Southern California. Payne currently serves as associate principal of teaching and learning at Maine East High School and previously was district director of instructional equity at Hinsdale Township High School District 86, a district MTSS specialist, a principal at Crenshaw Arts and Technology High School, and an English teacher and literacy coach at Thornton Township High School.
The board welcomed Payne and presented a brief introduction before the roll call. Dr. Waterman asked the board to vote on the recommendation and then introduced Payne to the meeting after the vote.
Votes at a glance: the transcript records the roll call answers as: “Member Gianotti Frye? Yes. Member Strewing? Yes. Member Thomas? Yes. Member Alvarez? Yes. Member Bowen? Yes. Member Grutch? Yes.” The motion carried.
Payne told the board she was encouraged that students participated on interview panels and said those interactions confirmed LT was the right place for her. The board and superintendent offered brief remarks of welcome.
