Veterans Assistance Commission reports $688,000 in new benefits for December, schedules spring resource fairs

The Veterans Assistance Commission told the Kane County Public Service Committee that its office helped secure $688,000 in new benefits for county veterans in December, an amount the presenter said exceeds the office’s annual property tax funding for operations.

Commission representative Jake Zimmerman (Veterans Assistance Commission) said the figure appears on page 48 of the committee packet and described several upcoming outreach events: a women veterans resource fair at the Prisco Center in Aurora on March 1, a senior resource fair at Elgin Community College on April 25, and a veterans resource fair at the Batavia VFW on May 2.

Zimmerman also discussed claims processing times and backlogs. He noted that the national average wait for a decision on disability compensation is about 146.9 days and that veterans who use the county office see a shorter processing timeline — he said the county office provides roughly a 15‑day advantage through direct assistance, tracking and advocacy. Zimmerman said the commission tracks claims over 125 days as backlog and provides monthly reporting on delays.

Committee members praised the commission’s work and asked whether proposed federal cuts had affected services; Zimmerman said no material impacts had reached his office at the time of the meeting but said layoff reports at the regional VA hospital could affect future service availability.

The committee did not take formal action; the Veterans Assistance Commission’s report was placed on file.
