Superintendent Dr. Snell thanked the community for support of the recent levy effort and reported an uncertified ballot count showing roughly 53.7 percent in favor. He also acknowledged recent school closures on Thursday and Friday and said makeup days are already on the district calendar and that communications will be sent to families.
Taylor Richmond, district staff, highlighted several procedural updates being posted for public information. Richmond said the district has updated its grievance procedures for alleged harassment in light of changes to Title IX regulations, noting the rules are reverting to the 2020 framework; the updated procedures will be posted on the district’s online documents at the end of the month.
On financial governance, Richmond previewed revisions to Policy 6210, Purchasing Authorization and Control. The proposed revisions would raise the board review and approval threshold to $150,000 and require that continuing contracts be returned to the board if an annual increase to the contract or expenditure exceeds 10 percent. Richmond said the change reflects adjusted financial governance practices; the revision will be presented for second reading at next month’s board meeting.
The Instructional Materials Committee presented its usual packaged report and a recommendation to approve instructional materials. Richmond said the materials in the package were not flagged for challenging content in the current draft. Because the Committee of the Whole does not take formal action, the instructional materials recommendation will appear on the March regular board meeting agenda for consideration.
Board members asked about communication plans related to several items: Director Zavala asked how the district will notify families most affected by the immigrant/refugee policy; staff said messaging to staff was sent the day before and that public messaging went out in January with follow-up to come after board approval. Director Spruill and others thanked staff for responsiveness to prior questions and for moving particular items more quickly when community concern indicated urgency.
No votes were taken in the Committee of the Whole; the next regular board meeting was noted as March 11, when some items reviewed tonight will return for formal consideration.
