The Moraine City Council on an unnamed date approved its previous meeting minutes, elected Sylvia as chair and Patty as vice chair, and reviewed the city’s Tree City USA designation and seasonal tree-planting guidance.
The council confirmed that Moraine received Tree City USA recognition on Feb. 11, marking the city’s 14th consecutive year with the designation; staff said the city is on track to reach 15 years next year. A staff member present at the meeting said the Arbor Day/Tree City USA award ceremony will be held April 24 in Wyoming, Ohio, and that the event is limiting attendance to four people per city. "Was a week ago today, on February 11, that we did get the approval for Tree City USA," the staff member said.
The staff member thanked multiple city departments for supporting the designation, including Parks and Recreation (with a special mention of Bridal Kelly for the Arbor Day event), the Streets Department for tree maintenance, and the Community Development Department for program support. Staff also said the city plans to add Tree City USA decals to new "Welcome to Moraine" signs scheduled for installation in early March and is considering expanding Tree City USA signage around the city.
Council members discussed a tree-planting guide pulled from the Growing Home website that outlines recommended species and seasonal planting guidance for Ohio. Staff summarized the guide’s recommendations: the best times to plant are late fall through early spring; pine species can often be planted year-round; and common species mentioned included dogwood, red maple, sweet gum, white oak, black walnut, eastern redbud, empress tree and western flowering dogwood. The staff member also advised staking newly planted trees if planted on windy days and watching for insects that damage leaves or trunks.
Formal actions recorded in the meeting included approval of the previous meeting minutes, a motion to excuse an absent member (speaker not named in the transcript), and elections for chair and vice chair. Roll-call confirmations during the votes included the following members recorded on the roll: Missus Duff, Missus Grooms, Missus Harlow, Missus Bond and Missus Vaughn; each was recorded as voting yes in the roll-call exchanges preserved in the transcript.
The council confirmed its next meeting date as April 15. The staff member closed the item and had nothing further.
