District expands career awareness; students sample virtual reality and Cleveland Clinic career rounds

The Twinsburg Board of Education heard an update on the district’s career-awareness efforts on Feb. 19, including virtual-reality experiences, Cleveland Clinic “career rounds,” ongoing career panels and plans to develop career-technical education coursework.
An administrator at RB Chamberlain Middle School said the district has increased career exposure through events such as a veterans panel, CVCC presentations and monthly Cleveland Clinic career-round sessions that allow students to attend remote, interactive presentations about medical careers. He said the district is also piloting virtual-reality simulations so students can “visit” firms or manufacturing sites without long bus trips.
Victoria Brandt, a seventh-grader, described attending a Cleveland Clinic NICU presentation. “They showed us the steps like checking their heart rate, starting positive pressure ventilation, repositioning the airway and suction,” Brandt told the board. She listed roles that are part of a NICU team, including neonatal nurse practitioner, respiratory therapist and registered dietitian. Brandt said the presentation helped confirm her interest in a medical career; she told the board her aunt works in a NICU.
Administrators said the district has more career-exploration activities planned, including a high-school exploration fair scheduled for March 5 with employers and apprenticeship representatives and a CVCC job fair March 6. Board members and staff framed career awareness as an equity issue, saying exposing students to a range of careers helps those who lack personal networks to learn about nontraditional pathways.
The board said it supports development of a career-technical education course and praised student participation in virtual events. The district said it will continue expanding partnerships with organizations such as Cleveland Clinic and CVCC.
