City Council approves MOU with San Diego State University to host college workshops at Imperial Public Library

The City of Imperial Council voted 4-0 to approve a memorandum of understanding with San Diego State University and its Imperial Valley campus to provide college workshops and outreach at the Imperial Public Library.
The agreement, presented by Amber Heller, library administrator, directs SDSU to provide workshops on college applications, financial aid and scholarships, to supply library resources and to make university representatives available for questions and guidance. “This partnership does not require additional city funding. SDSU will provide its services and resources at no cost,” Heller said during the presentation.
The MOU is intended to expand access to higher education in Imperial by offering in-person recruitment, Spanish- and English-language support for parents, and direct contact between prospective students and SDSU staff. San Diego State Imperial Valley officials said the campus offers undergraduate and four‑year degree pathways relevant to local needs, including nursing, public health, criminal justice, mathematics and liberal studies.
Dr. Nunez, speaking for SDSU Imperial Valley, described the campus’s outreach work and resources: “Our outreach team has attended many community events, and we’ve shepherded in many of our students to do recruitment in local high schools, sharing with them what it means to have a university education and how it can change their lives and their families and their communities.” He added that SDSU Imperial Valley will use the library’s community room for workshops and provide Spanish-language support for families.
City staff said the partnership leverages existing library space and university staff without creating a new budget obligation for the city. Council members thanked staff and SDSU representatives; a signing of paperwork was arranged following the vote.
Action: Council motion to approve the MOU carried 4-0. No city funding was authorized as part of the agreement; SDSU’s services were described as provided at no cost to the city.
Ending: City staff and SDSU officials planned a signing ceremony after the meeting and said outreach would begin through library programming and community events.
