Blue Ribbon Committee reviews attendance policy, reappointment rules and strategic‑plan follow-up

The City of Laredo Blue Ribbon Committee for People with Disabilities reviewed membership and attendance rules at its Feb. 19 meeting and discussed next steps for the committee’s strategic plan and training follow‑up.

Members examined a city policy that, as stated in the meeting, automatically removes a committee member after four absences. Participants noted that earlier guidance and practice also ties membership to mayoral reappointment: when a new mayor takes office, members are typically reappointed at the mayor’s discretion.

Committee members said the group voted at a prior meeting to keep the committee’s authorized membership at 10, and they reiterated the need to monitor absences going forward. A member noted that the policy allows virtual attendance when a physical quorum exists; otherwise virtual participation counts as an absence.

The committee also reviewed training materials and requested that staff re‑send the Jan. 27 PowerPoint slides that clarify committee roles. Members described the annual strategic plan as a “living document” to be updated as goals are achieved and directed staff to put outstanding items (for example, a pending letter to the mayor’s office requesting appointment of a sign‑language interpreter) into old business for future meetings.

Minor corrections to minutes from Jan. 15 were discussed; members agreed to approve the minutes after the noted edits. The meeting closed with a motion to adjourn. No new membership appointments or formal policy changes were made at Feb. 19 meeting.
