Lauren Shear, a parent of two Revere students and a member of the Akron Jewish community, used public comment time at the Feb. 18 Revere Local Board of Education meeting to thank district staff for curriculum and trip changes aimed at deepening students’ historical understanding.
Shear said the planned inclusion of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on the eighth-grade Washington, D.C., trip beginning in 2026 and the decision to integrate the text All But My Life into the eighth-grade English-language-arts program "exemplifies a commitment to fostering empathy in a learner's mindset among our children." She added that, "At a time when antisemitism is on the rise, providing students with the opportunity to engage this history firsthand is more important than ever."
Shear praised specific staff and administrators by name — "the administration, Mrs. Roach, the eighth-grade ELA team, Mr. Connolly, Dr. Oberhauser, and Mrs. Stotherd" — and told the board the museum visit will help students connect with "the real stories of those who suffered, deepening their understanding of the dangers of hatred and the importance of standing up against injustice." She closed by thanking the board for prioritizing the experience for students.
The remark was made during the meeting’s public-comment period; no formal action or vote on the trip or the curriculum item occurred at the Feb. 18 meeting, and the board did not enter executive session.
