Buckeye Valley plans optional kindergarten camp, early screenings and earlier class assignments

Josh Martin, principal at Buckeye Valley West, said the district will offer an optional kindergarten camp the first four days of August, from Aug. 3 to Aug. 7, with a $100 fee and discretion to provide scholarships to families in need. "They'll be able to walk all around and get to know everyone and just have lots of fun time with stories and play and just making new friends before the school year even begins," Martin said.
Administrators described a broader screening plan: two Friday screenings at each elementary school this spring and a late screening around July 30 for late enrollments. The screenings will include academic assessments, speech and language screeners, and hearing and vision checks. Parents will meet with staff at the end of each screening so the district can share assessment results and recommend activities families can do to prepare children for kindergarten.
Staff said current preschool teachers will not replace kindergarten screening because of concern about assessment bias: "They really feel like it's important that current preschool students actually come through the screening process because we wanna eliminate some assessment bias," a district presenter said. The plan calls for a single kindergarten-camp coordinator overseeing teachers hired based on enrollment interest; staff will form class lists so that on the first day of school, parents will know their child's teacher. The district indicated the first day of school and full kindergarten start will be Aug. 13.
Olivia Penkow, a preschooler invited to the meeting as an example of an incoming kindergartner, told the board, "I'm excited for kindergarten because I'm, like, making a new friend in kindergarten." The transcript does not record a formal vote on the plan; administrators presented it as a proposed operational change and did not announce a final adoption or board action during the meeting.
