City presents Gomez Park design and Frasier Field progress; Little League presses for ADA walkway

City staff updated the El Centro City Council Feb. 18 on two park projects: the state‑funded Gomez Park reconstruction and continuing improvements at Eddie White Complex’s Frasier Field.
Community Services Director Adriana Nava said the Gomez Park project is a roughly $5.7 million grant‑funded project. She described the design as approximately 90% complete and said the bid was awarded to 3 Peaks; staff expect permit review in March and construction to start in April or May. The design includes multi‑sport courts, play areas with an accessible merry‑go‑round, a small amphitheater, vehicle charging stations, an accessible walking path and restroom/concession facilities. Nava said the green area will retain its retention‑basin function; grading will be shallow so the lawn can also function as stormwater storage.
On Frasier Field, Nava and City Engineer Abraham Campos described work already completed with Measure P and other grants — dugout renovations, batting cages and snack‑bar renovations — and showed proposed CDBG‑funded additions such as new bleachers, walkways, backstops and extended site work including parking and bioswales funded via an Air Pollution Control District grant. Nava emphasized prioritizing finishing a project so it remains useful for a decade rather than “sprinkling” small improvements across sites.
Representatives of El Centro Little League said parents and players need an ADA‑accessible walkway from the new parking area to the fields; Alex, vice president of the league, asked the council to consider expediting that walkway even if other elements must wait. Nava and staff said they would look at contractor availability and timing and try to determine what work could be completed before the season without disrupting play; staff cautioned some heavy work must wait until the season ends.
Nava also said the Gomez Park plan includes a dedicated tribute and relocation of a monument to David Gomez, and that city staff have met with family members.
No formal vote was required for the presentation; staff will continue design, permitting and scheduling work and return with construction timing and procurement details.
