Clinton City Schools staff updated the board Feb. 18 on a set of facility and capital projects, including fundraising for stage curtains at Sunset Auditorium, an engineering assessment of a failing brick facade, delivery of school‑safety "Alice Go" buckets and progress on a solar tax‑credit payment.
Curtains and fundraising: Staff said a long‑time community dance instructor organized a donation drive through the Sampson Arts Council to raise funds for rear and side stage curtains at Sunset Auditorium. The arts council campaign runs through Feb. 28; donations will be accepted through the council's portal. Staff noted side and window curtains are custom and expensive if replaced.
Auditorium facade and leaks: Facilities staff described cracking and separation of the auditorium’s brick facade and the precast canopy above the front steps. Engineers recommended removing the brick, replacing nine windows, adding insulation and installing metal panels because re‑bricking could be too heavy for the existing concrete supports. Staff said touching certain elements would trigger current‑code upgrades and potentially raise the cost toward a seven‑figure project, so they plan a bid alternate that boxes in and drains the canopy without requiring full replacement.
School safety kits: The district obtained school‑safety kits (sometimes called Alice Go buckets) as part of a safety grant. Vendors delivered kits to district warehouses and the first deliveries to LC Carr, Butler and Sunset were staged for classroom distribution. Staff said the kits will be delivered to classrooms as complete kits rather than sending components separately.
Solar tax credit and IRS case: Staff said an external tax firm reopened an IRS case about a previously filed tax‑credit claim for the district's existing solar array at Sunset. The firm told staff the IRS has what it needs and has escalated the review to a specialist; staff are awaiting further response and said they expect a resolution but had not yet received payment.
Why it matters: The projects range from maintenance and safety purchases to capital planning that could require substantial funding and coordination with state authorities. Board members asked about timelines, repair alternatives and whether community or vendor partners could reduce costs.
Ending: Staff said they will return with firm bid documents and cost estimates for the auditorium work and will notify the board when the solar tax‑credit matter is resolved.
