Council accepts city engineer’s observations on Bird’s Way depressions

City staff described a field inspection and excavation of depressed patches to determine whether the depressions were caused by subgrade deficiencies or by settlement of asphalt placed over time. Aaron Bristow, city engineer, said the excavations and hydrovac investigation showed soils beneath the patches did not differ materially from adjacent soils and that the observed depressions were consistent with asphalt settlement likely caused by inadequate compaction when the patches were placed.
Bristow explained compaction considerations and how different compaction equipment produces different consolidation over time. Staff said the crews had spent a day excavating and inspecting the areas and had prepared a written engineer’s observation report for council review.
A member of the public thanked staff for the report. The council approved the resolution by roll call.
