Henderson animal center reports lower intakes, high live-outcome rate and plans for facility improvements

Animal center staff presented the department's January report to the Henderson City Council, saying calls for service numbered 95 and there were 21 animal control officer (ACO) pickups during the period. Staff told the council the shelter's live outcome rate remains considerably higher than its euthanasia rate and described several planned facility and program improvements.

The presenter said the animal center is handling calls, setting traps, performing pickups and offering public education. Staff displayed a new ACO truck equipped with heating and air conditioning in the animal compartments to keep animals more comfortable during transport. The presenter identified a demonstration snake named Morticia as owned by an outside snake-handling trainer who instructs ACOs on proper handling.

Planned capital and operational improvements listed by staff include construction of isolation/medical buildings to quarantine sick animals and support treatment and transport logistics, a front-of-house meet-and-greet room that could double as a cattery so visitors can safely interact with animals outside of kennel spaces, and sound-baffle installation in the kennel area to reduce stress and improve staff communications. Staff also said the department plans to expand community outreach and education, pursue grant opportunities that support outreach, broaden the local rescue network and host “mega” adoption events regionally.

Council members commended the animal center staff and one councilmember requested that departmental reports be made promptly available to the council and public. No formal council actions or votes on the animal center's requests were recorded in the transcript.
