New Hanover County Endowment reports $16M in Q4 grants, readies $30M for upper‑band awards

Representatives of the New Hanover County Endowment presented an update Feb. 18 on staffing, grant activity and program priorities. Endowment chair Shannon Winslow and staff described organizational growth, a multi‑band grant strategy and significant recent awards.
The endowment reported awarding more than $16 million in grants during the fourth quarter of the previous year, with that quarter focused on community development, affordable housing and social and health equity. The presenters said the endowment has received more than $40 million in requests for its larger grant bands (social impact investing, strategic grants and project grants) while holding about $30 million of uncommitted funding this year to allocate.
Staff described a four‑part strategic plan and a tiered “grants rainbow” model: the upper three bands (large, impact grants) are undergoing a priority refresh to concentrate funding on two or three focus areas; the lower three bands (community grants, capacity grants, operations grants) are intended to deliver smaller, targeted awards accessible to more organizations. Presenters said the endowment is building out leadership and external‑affairs capacity and intends to announce details of the community and capacity grants program in early March to April.
Commissioners asked about the small ($5,000) community grants mentioned; endowment staff said those are being distributed in some cases through intermediary organizations already funded by the endowment, and that the endowment expects to roll out direct small grants to the community in early March (with April as a backup timeframe). The endowment also signaled a recent or pending capital award in the multi‑million range that would be announced shortly; presenters described a $7,000,000 grant (not yet publicly announced by the endowment at the time of the meeting) intended as catalytic funding for a capital project with total project cost reported in the presentation.
The board and presenters praised volunteer board members and staff for their organizing work and signaled ongoing coordination with county priorities.
