New board members sworn in; Melanie Wellens elected vice chair and committee assignments approved

At a regular meeting of the Horry County Board of Education, members were sworn in, officers elected and several routine governance items approved by voice vote.
The meeting opened with administration of the oath of office for newly seated and returning board members, led by local officials and judges. Board members introduced themselves and their attendance-area districts at the podium.
The board elected Melanie Wellens as vice chair after a motion to nominate her was moved and seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote; members in attendance answered “aye.” The board then approved the meeting agenda as presented and approved minutes from the Nov. 11 and Nov. 19 sets of minutes. The chair also announced a minor committee calendar change: the curriculum committee meeting will be moved from Jan. 27 to February (date to be confirmed) due to availability conflicts.
The board approved the monitoring report R2 (numeracy) as compliant after discussion. The board then approved the top four standing committee assignments — finance, facilities, human resources and policy — as presented and agreed to readdress the safety committee and a possible merger of curriculum and technology committees at the next meeting on Jan. 27. Those four committee rosters were approved by voice vote.
Other routine business items, including consent agenda items, were approved and the meeting adjourned by voice vote.
