Later in the meeting the board approved four standing committees (finance, facilities, human resources and policy) and agreed to readdress the safety committee and the proposed merged curriculum-and-technology committee at the Jan. 27 meeting.
Board members noted budgetary stakes during the discussion. One member cited a district safety allocation of about $15 million plus $4 million for technology infrastructure and storage; speakers said heightened board oversight would help ensure accountability while protecting operational confidentiality. Dawson said possible committee duties would include reviewing stakeholder communications and non-sensitive transparency measures, collaborating with external agencies and advising on budget accountability — not substituting for staff's operational expertise.
No formal vote was taken to create the safety and security committee; the proposal is pending policy committee review and subsequent board action.
