Council approves $1.355 million TDC grant application for beach maintenance; seeks added funding for ADA access and fireworks coordination

Town Manager Andy and staff said the annual TDC request compiles recurring needs for beach accesses, plantings lost to storm damage and equipment to maintain beach access points. Frankie (town staff) said this year’s application emphasizes restoration and maintenance—plantings at beach accesses, additional beach rangers and equipment to support beach operations.
Council discussion broadened to accessibility and special events. Mayor Allard and Council members urged staff to include or prioritize funding for ADA‑accessible equipment that helps people with mobility limitations reach the water—often described as “MobiMats” and beach wheelchairs. Jeff (public works) said the town has been ordering mobility equipment and that a set of wheelchairs and mats were on order with expected delivery in weeks; staff noted mats have to be reinstalled after beach renourishment.
Councilors also asked staff to coordinate with Sanibel on a joint TDC request to support fireworks displays launched from barges during peak holidays and to explore drone‑show options for future events. The mayor asked staff to consult Sanibel, provide estimated costs (the council discussed a placeholder of about $90,000 for fireworks) and include the request before the March 7 grant application deadline.
