El Segundo plans letter to AQMD ahead of Aug. 4 abatement hearing after recent Hyperion odor complaints

City Manager Daryl George told the City Council that El Segundo plans to submit a letter in advance of the South Coast Air Quality Management District's abatement hearing scheduled for Aug. 4, citing continued concerns about odors from the Hyperion treatment plant.
George said that over the past two weeks AQMD had received approximately 19 odor complaints and that AQMD issued a notice of violation on Feb. 14 for public nuisance related to odors. City staff directed residents to the city's Hyperion information page for more details.
The council received the update; no formal enforcement action by the council was reported at the Feb. 18 meeting. The upcoming AQMD hearing is an external administrative proceeding at which the city plans to make a pre-hearing submission.
