Planning board backs vacation of section of NE Sixth Terrace for YMCA/Broward Health site

The Fort Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Board on Feb. 19 voted to recommend vacation of a portion of Northeast Sixth Terrace between Northeast Eighth Street (Ninninger Drive) and Northeast Ninth Street to make way for a planned YMCA and Broward Health development east of Federal Highway.
Attorney Robert Lockrey, representing the YMCA and Broward Health (the city’s lessee on adjacent property), said the right‑of‑way in question was dedicated by the Progreso plat in 1911 and that most properties that earlier used the right‑of‑way were purchased by the city in the 1990s and have since been cleared. He said the applicant agrees to the conditions in the staff report and that the vacation meets the criteria for approval.
No members of the public spoke on the item. The board voted to recommend approval of case UDP V24001 based on the staff report and applicant testimony. The roll call showed unanimous support from the board members present; the board’s approval will follow the city’s standard process for right‑of‑way vacations and will include the staff conditions recorded in the staff report.
The applicant noted the site will be the future home of the YMCA and Broward Health facility, and staff confirmed the property will proceed through the vacation process toward subsequent development review.
